re: #288 wrenchwench

I was just visited by a customer I haven’t seen in at least 5 years. He talked about wanting to upgrade a bike I built for him with, among other things, carbon fiber wheels. After he left, I remembered that he took one of my tune up classes and told us (me and the other three students) about being in the bottom of the Grand Canyon (having hiked down there) and getting into an argument with one of his companions about the earth being only 6,000 years old. My customer was (and is, for all I know) a Young Earth Creationist. Then I felt bad for not giving him an evidence-based reason for my thinking that carbon fiber wheels might not be a good idea. I don’t have one. All I have is this onion on my belt.

“Steel spokes and steel frames were good enough for Eddy Merckx, and by god, they’re good enough for you!”
