Repeat of a favorite hobbyhorse:
People want us to ārun government like a businessā, which, on the surface has some merit: government should be run on sound, sustainable economic principles.
But to a businessperson, things like education, health care, worker safety and environmental protection are all business expenses that are to be minimized or eliminated in order to increase the bottom line.
To a sound and responsible government, those are all things that constitute an investment into a prosperous, healthy and productive society.
They donāt really want to run government like a business. The very second we started having a budget surplus, under Bill Clinton, they absolutely would not have it! Revenue absolutely must be reduced! What kind of business considers it immoral to be in the black?
