My remembrance is that a major reason Carter lost his 1980 re-election bid was that he withdrew to the White House and was perceived as giving up on governing after the Iran hostage crises started.

The Iran raid also brought into question hs ability to govern effectively.

I suspect that Speaker of the House Pelosi is slowly manuevering Trump and the Republicans into this corner. There are obviously a lot of questions with this strategy.

First is whether and for how long, the media will continue to confuse noise, smoke and mirrors for effective governing.

I think that his clown show is viewed as entertainment by the least vulnerable. And a disaster for many of the most vulnerable. As we are seeing, many of those who thought themselves invulnerable and they voted for Trump, are finding themselves quite vulnerable. (“Leopards eating faces” meme, for example.)

Second, there is always the question of timing. Trump and the Republican position is being eroded. Will it be eroded enough by the elections to force Republicans to choose between saving their skin in the election or going down with their party?

Unfortunately, as Stonekettle has pointed out, there is no cavalry coming to the rescue. No Deus ex Machina. Mueller wasn’t. End of Times isn’t. Impeachment isn’t. We (as a country) got ourselves into this mess. And it is up to us, as a country, to get ourselves out of this mess. (Or not get ourselves out of it, as the case may be.)

In any case, it is unlikely to be resolved democratically until the 2020 elections. So I would recommend doing everything that you need to do for yourself, in order to hold on for the next 18 months.
