The whole problem with the death penalty for me was summed up when people applauded Rick Perry when the forum moderator announced that he had presided over a record number of executions and the audience applauded him.
Prosecutors see a death penalty conviction as another notch on their pistol, something that is going to help get them promoted. As long as that attitude prevails, they are going to push for the death penalty wherever they think they can get one, and if Texas juries are anything like the audience that applauded Rick perry (and I fear they are), thery are going to succeed.
