To answer your other part: McAuliffe was, at the time, in command of the then-already-legendary 101st Airborne. He was promoted to CinC European Theater after the war. He obviously had some merit as a commanding officer.
Taylor was commander of the airborne but McAuliffe was in charge because he was on leave in Washington when the Bulge happened I believe. Glad he got a post career because the 101’s grit in the Bulge was the stuff of legends. The Bulge has always had a place in my imagination because of both Band of Brothers and both my parents having uncles present at the batlte.
