My take is that he, and a number of other conservatives abandoned the Republican Party when it became both a personality cult and an authoritarian party. What caught my eye was his tweet back in 2017 that a large group of his colleagues, if given a choice between abandoning their values or rejecting democracy, would reject democracy.
I may not agree with his policy choices, and reject a number outright. But I do agree with his choice to place democracy as the priority value.
This, to me, goes directly to the central value in life, the Golden Rule. A value that is rejected by many in the GOP right now. (And which is pointed out in various restatements, such as “Laws bind thee and protect me”.
