I will never forget the time when I was in John Wanamaker’s selling jewelry when a Canadian who spoke French approached the counter and asked if I spoke his language. I promptly answered “Je ne parle pas francais.” He responded in English, “That is a shame. You missed out on a sale.” I said, “Yes, I know.”
I would have said “No, but I’ll find someone who can.” At most jobs I’ve worked, I’ve either had a co-worker or someone at a neighboring business who spoke French.
