I hope I don’t offend any vets here but I fear we’re turning respect for veterans into a cult and making true respect a mockery.

On May 15, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge vetoed a bill granting bonuses to veterans of World War I, saying: “patriotism… bought and paid for is not patriotism.”

“Respect the vets” as long as it doesn’t cost anything. Coolidge is a conservative favorite among ex-presidents.
