re: #248 ObserverArt

The most important thing for a photographer is the eye and some two-dimensional design study. A good eye with an inexpensive camera will go a lot further than someone that thinks the more they can spend on the camera the better they will be.

My niece went to Drexel and graduated the last year (I think) they offered a degree in photography. She did her summers with Jock Sturges and all that entails. Is a brilliant technician in the darkroom and with Photoshop. She bought one Drexel’s Hasselblad cameras for (from what I understand) for a song. Moved to Vencie, CA, to become one of the glitterati. Decided to skip bread-and-butter projects and jump straight to ‘high-art’ photography. Her work is not good. She has no eye for composition and the arty stuff doesn’t make any point.

She has, reluctantly, moved to doing weddings and some portrait work, but doing it kicking and screaming. It doesn’t help that the photography clique she is in reinforces the poor decisions. As far as I can tell, she does lots of assistant work and she’s been doing a photo-a-day project for the last three or four years. Every once in a while, she does nail something (she was published in some Baltimore City magazine) but.
