re: #284 suchislife

I know. At first it was funny, “look at the right embarassing itself!”, but the right is half of the country, and they didn’t slip up, or had a mad uncle regularily crash the party, they fell off the ledge.

I’d say that only part of the right fell off the ledge. I’ve got plenty of conservative and/or Republican friends and relatives who shake their heads in amazement at the tea party crowd, the birthers, and the more virulent ODS-addled folks on the far right.

Unfortunately, the part of the right that fell off the ledge is the more politically activist wing that demands ideological purity and which has spent decades working itself into the power structure of the GOP. That’s the problem. They make it almost impossible for a more reasonable discussion to take place, since any attempts at seeing the other side or in being pragmatic gets you labeled a RINO or a sellout. The end result is the far right saying and doing some questionable things and very, very few Republican politicians calling them out for it because they’d be going against a very active, very motivated base, putting their job in jeopardy.
