If you really want some impressive desolation, hang a right off 395 at 168 in Big Pine and go up the Westgard Pass and then down into Deep Springs Valley. If they’ve had rain there lately, it should be magnificent.

Salton Sea. Ain’t nothing else in California got that combination of apocalyptic fucked-upness mixed with wildlife preserve. Winter is a good time for bird watching there.
