You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. Trump simply parrots talking points because he doesn’t understand concepts like trade imbalances. His supporters don’t know how this works either, so if Trump says it, they believe him.

It’s something that has to be solved - bigly.

Of course, Trump’s solution has nothing to do with trade balances, but will add costs to US consumers (because that’s who ultimately pays for this stuff).

Strong/weak dollar. Types of goods/services purchased/sold. All of that plays into how trade imbalances occur. We want lots of cheap clothes and goods, so we buy them from Vietnam. Vietnam doesn’t need as much sophisticated services or goods (think aircraft, legal/accounting services, etc., and has other places it buys fuel from) so we buy more stuff from Vietnam than they buy from US.
