Willard is angling for another presidential run, hoping for a repeat of 1968, when a discredited incumbent declined to run, and a candidate who had been defeated 8 years earlier came back to win. The difference is that LBJ and Nixon belonged to different parties.

The Dems still could have won 1968, except that their best choice was killed 2 months before the convention, and then the convention itself was a shitshow. (two shitshows — one inside, the other outside)
