The Iranian revolution, hostage crisis, and failed rescue get a lot of credit for that. Ted Koppel hosted a TV news show about it 1/2 hr a day every day for more than a year. (after the hostages were freed, the show became Nightline.)

Also, inflation and interest rates were between 6 and 8% for 1978 and 1978, climbing well into the double digits for 1979 and 1980.
