Politics came up again this morning at the restaurant my Dad and I frequent on Saturdays, and one of the waitstaff who knows us well and likes to talk with us volunteered that Trump has absolutely woken up the Mexican American community in a way that will probably be disastrous for the GOP.

One of the reasons I like this restaurant so much is because the owner hires so many Mexicans as waitstaff. Which, if you’ve bothered to look around not everyone does, despite the fact that Mexicans make up the majority of the kitchen staff pretty much everywhere. So I like going to places like this that acknowledge them and give them equal opportunity to front of the house jobs. It’s kind of a small thing I guess but where other people are hyper critical about other things when they go out I’m especially sensitive to this because a long time ago I used to work in restaurants in Seattle and saw this unjustifiable divide first hand.

Anyway, back to the point. I’d remembered Thanos’ page about Cruz and Trump and the history lessons of the Prop 187 in California and asked our friend at the restaurant about it, if he’d been here in California when all that shit went down. Without missing a beat he responded immediately yes, cited Pete Wilson and all the shit from that awful campaign. It was like he was at a doctoral defense for a dissertation he’d written on the campaign.

Then he told us about his aunt who is a devout Jehovah’s Witness, and who as such has never voted. For the first time in her life she’s registered to vote and plans to vote for Hillary and whoever the Democratic nominee is in the general election. He had asked her about this and why she was going against her religious reasons for abstaining from voting now and she said something to the effect of “I have things and people I need to take care of.”

Woke.
