Once Al Gore came out as an advocate for climate change, they were compelled to deny it out of sheer cussedness.

I do not want to blame Gore at all for speaking out, but it was a bit presumptuous of him to assume he could just declare himself an Elder Statesman and promote a non-partisan cause to the benefit of all Americans and of humanity without facing purely political backlash.
