National geographic did a series called something like “Captured Abroad” about the real life stories of people kidnapped or arrested in some of these sketchy countries. Shit gave me nightmares.

Thats why I’ve had mixed emotions about the hikers caught along the Iraq/Iran border (or other similar stories)

On the one hand, if they did just make an honest mistake and were on, near, or slightly over the border, arresting, jailing and sentencing them (“ransom” money paid for their release aside) is ludicrous.
On the other hand, you have a few friends sitting around in an apartment in (lets say) Atlanta and decide “you know where we should go for a hike ,,,,”,, The Iran/ Iraq border,, or any “hot spot” around the world would NOT make me and my friends list
