Sorry to say but this is a sort of theological racism that pervades a lot of traditional and popular christian thinking. I had to go seminary to get it out of me and am still working on it. A lot of it is Luther’s doing, as he generated gobs of rhetoric in which he put the Catholic church of his day in the same bucket with “the jews” that he portrayed as opposing Jesus and called them both legalistic and vengeful; and put himself and Jesus in another bucket as offering freedom and love.
God is loving and God is a badass throughout the Bible and more than anything, “…my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)”
