Calvinism and predestination are very high on the list of fucked up ideas of all time.

The irony is that Calvin himself would agree with that - he considered predestination a serious theological problem that he tried to solve his whole life and he down played it a much as he could. John Knox, however, took the idea from Calvin and emphasized it while grafting it to his Presbyterian polity and created the utter mess that is called Calvinism to this day.
