One striking contrast between Reagan and Trump:
Reaganâs conservatism was a youthful movement (in spirit and often in fact), fueled by hopefulness for the future. Trumpâs conservatism is a reactionary movement of older Americans, fueled by anger and fear.https://t.co/COeSpzQwvuâ Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) May 19, 2018
Jesus, Bill - itâs the same goddam people!!! Theyâre 35 years older now, and theyâre frustrated that the world didnât stay the way they wanted it.
But, you know, it was ALWAYS about anger and fear. Itâs just that Reagan portrayed fucking the poors and the coloreds as âSelf Relianceâ. âWelfare queens driving Cadillacsâ, âStrapping young bucks on street corners buying T-bone steaks* with Food Stampsâ - any of that ring a bell?
*Why T-bone steaks? I think thereâs something semantically loaded about that. The phrase doesnât work the same way if you substitute Porterhouse, or Strip, or Ribeye. Funny, but I think itâs true.
