It reflects the social reality of America: People are more likely to see black people as criminals. So while a young white couple taking something from an abandoned grocery is seen as ‘retrieval’, when a young black man does it it’s ‘looting’.
However, honesty compels me to say that while I can honestly analyze the situation now when I am calm, in a crisis I myself would apply those labels.
