Again this is the problem I have with how people like yourself are presenting the debate. Someone like Rodrigo Duterte wouldn’t be able to run. I’m specifically referring to people like Ted Lieu who come to this country as children, get naturalized, serve in our armed forces, and presently in our Congress and would have been a citizen/resident for the US for a number of years. And honestly, if the worry was about a Manchurian Candidate, anyone with foreign born parents would be suspect and that simply is not right.

Why not? Armed forces is not a requirement for President. If Duterte (or someone like him) became a naturalised citizen, under your scheme he most certainly could run. So could my sister-in-law, the former Soviet citizen. (She wouldn’t vote for a GOP candidate if you tortured her though.)

If that scheme had been in place earlier, any one a number of the former Nazis that gained citizenship here could have run.
