It was started by a Kennedy. IIRC one had a daughter who was mentally ill and they had her lobotomized. After that totally ruined her, they created Special Olympics. It was the lobotomy that made the girl “special”….not the mental health issue.

/Of course I could be confusing two seperate Kennedys here.
