Yes I realize that. It was just an example of something that would make the average Joe/Jane realize how much their pay was reduced.

I can remember going up to the paymaster and being told that my $21.00 a month pay was reduced for certain expenses as dry cleaning, laundry etc.

Do you have any practical examples?
