I think this may be one reason why some RW state legislatures and governors are going to such lengths to keep Teslas from being sold in their states. They’re protecting other car manufacturers in their states whose products can’t measure up to the Tesla’s safety record and its’ ability to wean its’ drivers off of gas.

I think it is more a matter of protecting dealers than manufacturers. Dealers tend to be a very powerful local lobby in most states. Tesla’s sales model makes dealers very nervous. If Tesla agreed to license dealerships like all the other manufacturers I am guessing a lot of the opposition would go away.
