I’d say there is a 3rd reason: That the US is tired of this kind of domestic slavery by diplomats and wanted to send the diplomatic community a message. And when it comes to law enforcement, one way messages are sent is through harsh arrest and detention procedures.

Then you get the same treatment in their country…and lots of Americans are in India. Lots of potential “legal hostages” who can be charged with local crimes. This is a pissing match we should not have started. India is a world player now…and they will not tolerate their diplomats being arrested and strip searched in blatant violation of the Vienna accords.

If the diplomat broke the law, you deport her. You can ask the maid if she wants sanctuary here. That is it. Period.
