This is these are the things people were trying to warn us about in the days & months immediately following 9/11: the fear-induced myopia, the unforeseen consequences, the power we were giving the government that would be very difficult (if not impossible) to wrest away from it once given. The people who said those things were shamed, reviled, treated as unpatriotic—and they were 100% correct. We willingly gave up many of our freedoms and constitutional protections for the illusion of safety & security.
Now here we are with American citizens being disappeared to black sites with no due process; government surveillance of every aspect of our public lives and far too many aspects of what used to be our private lives; militarized police departments that view the citizens they’re supposed to protect as the enemy; and last but not least, a government that is not about to give back the powers we handed it on a silver platter.
It’s frightening. What happens if—when—some megalomaniacal, sociopathic politician eventually manages to scratch & claw his (or her) way to the presidency?
