It’s an ongoing problem.

Ridiculous. These fringe-nutbar types—my great-grandparents didn’t live like this, and neither did theirs. This kind of ‘my piety goes to 11’ behavior is what gets you things like the women who started covering their faces and wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves in the street.

Of course, nearly all haredi rabbis, maybe all of them, cracked down on that, but I don’t think they really took into account the origins of the behavior.
