Their choice was Hitler or Stalin… after 10+ years of Stalin’s domination and hundreds of thousands of people getting exiled to Siberia, the Nazis didn’t seem so bad.

Stalin was, arguably, much worse than Hitler. He’s certainly perceived as much worse in Eastern Europe.
