Thoughts.

It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it. - Robert E. Lee

War is a series of catastrophes followed by victory. - Georges Clemenceau

There is nothing as terrible as a battle lost, except a battle won. - Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington

More than an end to war, we want an end to the beginnings of all wars — yes, an end to this brutal, inhuman, and thoroughly impractical method of settling the differences between governments. - FDR

I notice the author of the book was a student of John Keegan’s, may he rest in peace. I read Professor Keegan’s book A History of Warfare. He remarked at the end of it that we humans must find a way to limit warfare, as it was done through much of history. Otherwise we will end up as the people of Easter Island did; nearly extinct because of the tangata rima toto, the men with bloodied hands.
