You know, the last thing I want to do is to even appear to defend Newt Gingrich, but I think you’re reaching a here in calling these things he said racist dog whistles. Which is not to say he hasn’t done it in the past (the food stamp president), but I don’t think he’s doing that here. He’s being a right wing demagogue pandering to right wing nutjobs, but I don’t think he’s being racist. Not here at least. For example, calling him a “false president” doesn’t necessarily imply he has a propensity to shirk his duties, or that he’s “lazy and shiftless,” nor does questioning whether “Obama has the stamina and desire to be president” nor does suggesting he has a “false celebrity-hood.” These are idiotic things to say, to be sure, but if Newt wanted to blow a dog whistle, he’d fall back on the tried and true chestnuts about Obama “arrogantly” doing this or that (suggesting he was “uppity”), or that he was “soft on crime,” or suggest that he was favoring blacks over whites, or say outright that Obama is an “affirmative action president,” - all of which I’m sure he’d done at one point or another over the years, but he’s not doing that here. He’s just being Newt, a fat, mean little man.
