Goldwater lived to regret the “Southern strategy,” particularly since he saw it as setting the precedent for Reagan’s embrace of the religious right. In some ways, the religious right is a continuation of the southern strategy. It is no coincidence that the deep south is the heartland of politically active, and radical, fundamentalism. Evangelicals scream bloody murder if you tar them with the segregationist brush, and it would indeed be unfair in many individual cases. Nevertheless, we see in today’s tea party that the overall movements and their respective philosophies are in fact parts of the same reactionary whole.
