Unfortunately, Mali is screwed. Radicals on one side, and a bunch of inept, power-hungry military officers on the other.

The UN isn’t getting involved, because no-one wants to take a risk. At some point, the concerned citizens of the US and Western Europe need to start pushing our governments. This is history repeating itself. This is what happened in Afghanistan starting about 20 years ago. That eventually led to 9/11.
