He didn’t think about this before retiring? Seriously? He couldn’t just get moved to a desk jockey position for 4 years to take a pension and benefits with him?

A similar, albeit involuntary thing happened to my father in 1995. Post-Cold War cuts in his specialty (he was a KC-135 navigator, a position now filled by an inertial navigation system) meant a promote-next-cycle-or-die scenario for hundreds of Majors with sterling careers and no desire to leave before 20 years. 17 1/2 years of excellent service led to a paltry severance check, no transition assistance (this was 1995, after all), and no possibility of making up the 2 1/2 years left for pension eligibility. “Force reshaping” is a weasel-worded euphemism for “Don’t let the door hit your soon-to-be-broke ass on the way out.”
