I don’t know how to write it long-form, but there is something eery in the way that imagined Bernie Sanders exists independent of actual Bernie Sanders, which is driving this kind of stuff.

Much like the gulf betweeen actual Ronald Reagan and legendary Ronald Reagan.

And the more general awfulness of being more interested in the abstract role a person plays, than the actual person.
