Because verification doesnā€™t simply mean ā€œnot a botā€ - it is supposed to be reserved for people who Twitter deems ā€œof noteā€ or likely to be impersonated. It comes with some additional tools to help manage things like oneā€™s mentions, I believe, although since Iā€™m not verified I have no idea. Charles might be able to offer some more insight on that area.

Mastodon has a different set-up but some issues of its own, like how moderating can play out in reality. I donā€™t know that either model is ultimately going to solve the ā€œunrestrained human natureā€ issue but I think that if it were applied better, Twitterā€™s approach has the better chance, honestly.

Thatā€™s part of what makes Twitterā€™s reluctance to deal with this so frustrating.

The only way to make Twitter play nice is to have full time staff that monitor it. But for something people donā€™t pay for, thatā€™s basically impossible.
