The RR as you know Joe combines the worst elements of social conservatism with the worst elements of right wing economics. It’s so messed up. I was at a Catholic mass a few years back and I almost wanted to walk out when the Priest used the Christmas Eve mass to whine about Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

My ex-boyfriend called me up last Sunday to ask me to dream up a name for his new consulting LLC. After I did that, I asked him where he’d gone to church this weekend. Well, he’d gone to the very liberal Methodist church Sunday morning, which is a newish thing since he has been so much a “I must go to mass every Sunday” Catholic. Then he said, “I went to St. XXXXXX’s [name omitted to protect it from vilification for stupidity] on Saturday night and I really don’t want to tell you about it because you’ll get upset.” Well, I finally pried it out of him: since it was Memorial Day weekend, the church had an American flag on a stand up at the altar AND an American flag in the back of the church and there was some overwhelming patriotic nonsense during the mass.

I wasn’t upset; instead I said to him, “I’m having trouble peeling my hand off my face from all the facepalming.” But the bigger point is that Christianity in America is in grave trouble when nationalism is more important than Jesus.
