For all the problems I have with the Catholic Church, at least they see no inherent conflict between Creation and Evolution.

That’s not why they distrust the Catholic church though. The Vatican under Francis has been like it always has a voice for immigrants but it’s amplified I think by the fact that Francis himself is the son of an immigrant. Plus his outspokenness on climate change too. They were used to pontiffs that just went along with them on the anti abortion and anti gay stuff which unfortunately hasn’t changed significantly in Catholic dogma but seems to be a less priority at the top.
