The caning you may be referring to was much later, in the 1850’s.

Jackson threatened to hang John C. Calhoun “as high as Haman” if South Carolina tried to secede. Calhoun backed down.

Jackson also earlier in the nullification crisis seriously considered calling Calhoun out for a dual.

I’m not terribly fond of Jackson as president, but that was his finest moment. It would have been an interesting sight to see a President other than Washington leading the troops in person had Calhoun pushed the issue.
