Think this is a fair criticism still? If so, which Dem surrogates/office-holders do you think defy this description?

Adam Schiff.
Maxine Waters.
John Dingell.
Kamala Harris.

It’s somewhat of a possibly reasonably fair criticism*, but the fundamental problem is that as far as the “MSM” is concerned, Democrats (no matter how large a Majority they might have) are systemically treated as an unrepresentative sidelight to “normal” (i.e. Republican) political alignments - the problem isn’t so much what Democrats say in the mainstream media; it’s getting them to say anything in the first place.
