I never read Forgotten Realms (a lot of Dragonlance, though :p ). Why do think so? A drow is a dark elf, right? On it face, a short guy with some practice with swords should be able to pull it off. Make-up doesn’t seem especially difficulty either — pointy ears, body paint, maybe contact lenses… No?

Dark Elf; Elven (slim anglo features) with jet black skin. No actor or studio wants to deal with the racial can of worms that would come up over the casting.
