Genealogy is an expensive hobby lol. That said, maybe the fact that they don’t know the full truth should make them less judgmental. I wagerto say that I’ve probably researched my direct line than most Americans and you know what, I still can’t find the emigration records for all my direct line. And even if I have, I have no idea if they were all strictly law abiding in the US. Odds are they probably were but you never know.

Not to mention the fact that prior to WW1, emigration to US was a vastly different experience that it was after - especially, as Adam Serwer’ Atlantic piece points out - after the Nativists’ wet-dream Immigration Act of 1924 went into effect.

Al four of my grandparents emigrated to the US before 1914: but were all, by the time they died, “American citizens” - with no qualifications. But again, it was just good timing.
