Not true of a soliton waves (I had a physics professor who was into solitons and nonlinear waves.)

Anyway, regarding tsunamis, remember that they are not surface waves but caused by the vertical displacement at the origin (the earthquake), and that they are traveling as part of the ocean, which itself is not a flat surface but sort of a “shell”, like an egg shell. At the opposite end (from the origin) of the shell one can see large movements.
