Several months ago, when I was visiting my daughter, I had a brief conversation with a young man from El Salvador. I was a bit shocked when he said he didn’t like Mexicans, paraphrasing, “They are the worst”. I think I understand more now what he meant.

Not that unusual, and not just recent. Years ago a Guatemalan acquaintance commented that she wasn’t happy that her kids were picking up Mexican Spanish at school. I imagine it’s just a case of “we’re better than our neighbors” which is pretty common everywhere.
