re: #299 William Lewis

If I were to get a single movie done about the Eastern Front, I’d love to see one on the battle of Smolensk (July-September, 1941) where the Russians, though losing the battle denied the Germans victory and laid the seeds of how they would stop the Germans short of Moscow and, eventually, win the war.

The Eastern Front has always fascinated me since my grandparents had aunts, uncles, and cousins who got caught up in the middle of it. The reason why I brought up Yugoslavia is according to family lore, my grandfather had a cousin killed and the survivors joined the Partisans. I’m not sure about the cousin getting killed part but I do know through talking to a cousin that we did in fact have family that took part in the resistance and according to a book another more distant cousin wrote the part of Slovenia where our family was from was right in the middle of it. It was sadly in some ways a Civil War since some more distant branches collaborated unfortunately.
