There were some really heinous crimes in the aftermath of the apartheid government losing power, but it wasn’t something like Somalia.

Poland is safer than Nebraska.

Most of those terrible crimes were a distant memory by the time we arrived. And even then, they were isolated incidents, not total civil war. South Africa still has its problems, but I was deeply impressed by the determination of nearly everyone to make the new government and social order work. I credit Mandela with inspiring his nation to be optimistic and compassionate.

I had a great time living there. Not sure if it’s the ideal place to retire, though.
