The publishers set the price. When Kindle first came out, the books were all sold at far less than a hardcover, but the publishers were like NOPE. Many of the books listed for Kindle say “Price set by publisher”

I can understand that, and I can see delaying the kindle release of a book until the hardcover has had some time to sell, but once the paperback comes out I would think the publishers themselves would prefer to sell an electronic version as it reduces their costs. Unless Amazon is taking such a big cut that it actually costs them more than printing and distributing the paperback.
