Scientists could announce tomorrow that they’ve developed fusion-powered cars that have unlimited range, are totally safe, and run on tap water…and wingnuts would oppose them because “ZOMG! THIS WILL PUT OIL COMPANIES OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!”

It’s not wingnuts — it’s people like the Koch Brothers whose fortune depends on the oil industry. They know the truth but they DON’T care. On a whole range of issues, terrible policies are propelled by greed and not fanaticism or ideology.
