I think that at its core explains why I’ve never embraced economic right wing thinking. Calvinism never influenced my grandparents or parents and thus me. I have one Great Grandparent who was raised Lutheran but the rest were Catholics of the Roman and Byzantine variety. Obviously those denominations have their own root problems but never this “Tough shit if you starve because you can’t afford something.” No child or adult for that matter should go without a meal.

Anglicans never fell for Calvinism either - thus the whole “Puritan” crap fest that the English ended up fighting a civil war over. Charles I was a shitty monarch but really it was the religious fighting that really set the stage for that bloody mess and the even worse disaster of the Commonwealth.

The New Model Army is why the founding fathers of this nation feared the idea of a standing army so much and put such an emphasis on militias. In a real sense one can blame the Puritans and their religious intolerance for the 2nd Amendment.
