And neither does Applegate.

What she is proposing is that there were hominids around for many hundreds of thousands of years, and anatomical modern humans around for a couple of hundred thousand years.

Yet 6000 years ago, yes, 6000 just like Bishop Ussher determined, somehow a God (the Abrahamic God) picked one couple in the Middle East to be Adam and Eve, and made them special. This couple was magically transformed by this God, so only they knew, really were held responsible, for what was right and wrong.

Applegate needs to keep Eve around because Applegate wants to keep Augustine’s view alive. Applegate writes (with emphasis):

I am guilty for Eve’s sin, but also because I sin like Eve

So in order to keep Augustinian original sin, Applegate needs a real woman to be the first sinner.
